I was diagnosed a year ago after becoming sexually active with my last boyfriend and he recently got tested, because he does every year and he doesn’t have anything not even HSV1 which I thought I got from him and if not he should have got it from me. I had slept with three people before that and they all got tested and no one else has it either, how can I have herpes???
I’ve heard from some people that you can get genital herpes via oral sex after having a cold sore and I’ve heard from others that you can’t becuase they’re different strans of herpes. But let’s say someone performs oral sex and gets a cold sore a couple days later, should the person who received the oral sex be concerned about getting genital herpes?
I have recently entered a relationship with a person who does have herpes 2. We both have HSV2 on the genitals.
Anyway, we are both on daily Valtrex as well. She recently gave me oral sex (no condom) and it freaked me out.
Considering, I wouldn’t even do that to her even knowing she was on valtrex. She’s had if or like 4 years and me 4 months. As long as we are both outbreak free, and are on valtrex…my understanding is we are relativly safe from passing it on to our mouths this way. I mean, I’m worried about her and me as well. I would like to return the favor to her, but I’m really scared. Should I or we be worried?
Or is it just a question of we both have to know when an outbreak, if any, will be coming and use caution? What is your experience in this?

Thanks,

please note…we are both on Valtrex (once daily)
ok i’m sooo confused because i just dont understand how HSV1 turns into genital herpes (HSV2). let me tell you what i know. HSV1 is cold sores and you get it through people that has it by kissing sharing drinks anything that have touched the person infected. however, when you give oral sex or lets say kissed someone else’s genitals while you have the HSV1, how come it automatically switches to HSV2 when that person gets it from you? or is it different? meaning if that person gets genital herpes from HSV1, can you tell the difference if a person gets genital herpes from HSV2? because this is really really serious since researching online, it shows that 85-90% of the population has HSV1 but just dormant or some shows it by having cold sores. if almost everyone has the virus then wouldn’t it give a lot of people genital herpes since a lot of people give oral sex/kissing? however not everyone gets genital herpes through HSV1 so this is just confusing.
thank you for all your answers!
thanks so far for the answers, but can you comment on how crazy it is that 85-90% population has the HSV and just by having that virus while giving oral sex it could transfer to someone’s genitals and turn into genital herpes. so do you agree that we should NEVER give oral sex unless protected? however, not everybody uses condom/diahprams while doing oral
This question is only for people who currently have HSV 2. Is it certain foods or drinks, clothing, activities, stress, sleep, etc. I take 500mg. of acyclovir twice a day, eat well, exercise and have no other health issues, yet I am still having outbreaks (or at least they begin-I double the dosage to curtail the outbreak). I haven’t had sex in a year and am afraid intercourse will cause a real problem. I have had HSV2 for two years now. Thanks for any help.
